Elimination Diet 101:A Guide to Identifying Food Sensitivities (or Allergies) with X3 Health

Feeling bloated, gassy, or just plain uncomfortable after meals? You might be dealing with food intolerances or sensitivity. With so many processed foods and hidden allergens, it can be challenging to pinpoint the exact cause. That's where an elimination diet can help.

In this guide, we’ll explain how an elimination diet works, why it’s beneficial, and how you can start identifying food sensitivities to improve your health and well-being. This is especially useful if you've been struggling with digestive issues, fatigue, or other unexplained symptoms. Surprisingly, even symptoms that do not seem to be related to the gut/intestines can be caused by what we eat!

What Is an Elimination Diet?

An elimination diet is a short-term eating plan designed to help you discover which foods might be causing adverse reactions. By removing specific foods for a set period, then reintroducing them one at a time, you can determine which foods trigger symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, or stomach cramps. In addition, other symptoms like nasal congestion, headaches, fatigue, weight gain, and achy joints can also be related. It’s a proven method that allergists and registered dietitians have used for decades to help people identify food intolerances, sensitivities, and allergies.

How Does It Work?

The elimination diet has two phases: elimination and reintroduction.

  • The Elimination Phase: This phase lasts about 2–3 weeks (longer if you have severe symptoms). During this time, you remove foods you suspect might be causing your symptoms. This includes common triggers like dairy, wheat, eggs, soy, citrus fruits, nightshade vegetables, and nuts. By eliminating these foods, you give your body a break from potential irritants and can monitor if your symptoms improve. It also allows for gut healing.

  • The Reintroduction Phase: After the elimination phase, you slowly reintroduce the removed foods, one at a time. For example, after eliminating eggs, you would reintroduce eggs and eat them several times on day 1, then monitor for any symptoms on days 2 & 3 (without introducing any other new foods.) This allows you to watch for any adverse reactions, such as skin rashes, joint pain, headaches, or digestive issues. If you experience symptoms, it's a sign that this food may be a trigger, and you should consider eliminating it for a longer period of time (3-4 months) before trying it again.

Benefits of an Elimination Diet

An elimination diet provides several benefits:

  • Identifying Food Triggers: By isolating and reintroducing foods, you can determine which ones cause your symptoms, allowing you to tailor your diet to avoid those triggers.

  • Improving Digestive Health: Once you know which foods are causing issues, you can remove them to reduce bloating, gas, and other digestive problems. This also allows the gut and microbiome to heal/adjust.

  • Enhancing Overall Well-Being: Removing food triggers can lead to increased energy, better sleep, and a more balanced mood.

What to Avoid on an Elimination Diet

The most effective elimination diets remove the most commonly known food triggers. (We recommend eliminating them all to start, because identifying food triggers is otherwise very challenging.)

Here are some foods to avoid during the elimination phase:

  • Dairy products

  • Wheat and gluten-containing foods

  • Eggs

  • Soy

  • Citrus fruits

  • Nightshade vegetables (like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants)

  • Certain meats and seafood

  • Sugary snacks and desserts

Consult a Professional

Before starting an elimination diet, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian. They can guide you through the process, ensuring you don't inadvertently create nutritional deficiencies or put yourself at risk of an allergic reaction. Remember, reintroducing a food allergen can trigger severe symptoms, so always take the necessary precautions.
