Memorial Day Guide: Kick Off Summer with Health and Happiness

Memorial Day is a time to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. At X3 Health, we reflect on the sacrifices they have made to keep us safe and show gratitude for how they support our country.  Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of summer—a season filled with sunny days, outdoor adventures, and delicious barbecues. As you plan your Memorial Day celebrations, let's talk about ways to enjoy the day while staying healthy. Don't worry, it's okay to indulge—we're all human! But a little planning can help you balance fun with wellness, so you can feel great all summer long.

Stay Safe in the Sun

Summer means more time outdoors, which is fantastic, but it also means more exposure to the sun. Protecting your skin is a must! Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply 15-20 minutes before sweating or getting wet.  Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming, even if you think you don’t need it. Don’t forget the commonly overlooked spots like the back of your neck, ears, hands, and the tops of your feet. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can add extra protection, and they look stylish too!

Hydration Is Key

Staying hydrated is essential, especially on warm days filled with outdoor activities. Start by drinking 1-2 glasses of water in the morning before any activities. Carry a reusable water bottle and take frequent sips. If plain water doesn't excite you, try adding slices of fruit, cucumber, or herbs like mint to infuse it with flavor. Hydration not only helps you stay cool but also keeps your energy levels up for a full day of fun.

Balance Fun with Healthy Choices

Memorial Day barbecues often include a spread of delicious foods, from burgers and hot dogs to chips and desserts. It's okay to indulge, but moderation is key. Here are some tips for enjoying your favorites while staying on track with your health goals:

  • Fill Your Plate with Color: Load up on fruits and vegetables. Grilled veggies, fresh salads, and fruit platters are tasty and nutritious. Eat these first.

  • Opt for Lean Proteins: Choose grilled chicken, fish, or plant-based options for a healthier protein source.

  • Moderate Your Portions: Enjoy your favorites but in moderation. You don't have to deprive yourself, just be mindful of how much you're eating. Eat these after you have filled up on other nutritious options to decrease your chances of overeating them.

  • Find Time to Move: Whether it's a game of beach volleyball, a walk on the sand, or a quick dip in the pool, find fun ways to stay active throughout the day.

It's Okay to Have a Day Off

Let's be honest: sometimes, you just want to relax and enjoy the day without worrying about being super healthy. That's completely fine! Memorial Day is about spending time with loved ones, honoring our heroes, and having fun. If you indulge a bit more than usual, don't stress about it. You can always get back on track tomorrow. Life is about balance, and one day of indulgence won't derail your overall health.

Make the Most of Memorial Day

As you celebrate Memorial Day, remember the real meaning behind the holiday while also embracing the start of summer. Whether you're spending the day at the beach, having a barbecue, or just relaxing at home, take time to enjoy the moment. With these tips from X3 Health, you'll be ready to kick off summer with a balance of fun and wellness.

Here's to a fantastic Memorial Day and a summer filled with sunshine, good times, and great health. THANK YOU to all who have served and continue to do so. Enjoy!
